GIS Day 2009

Carleton University

Shawn Melamed – Application Specialist/QA at PCI Geomatics

On November 18th I represented PCI Geomatics at Carleton University’s 2009 GIS Day event. I was joined by a diverse group of vendors, representing many different facets of the geospatial industry. The focal point of the day, however, belonged to Atlas Canada when they announced the release of their newly updated 1:4,000,000 scale reference map of Canada. The very first commercial copy of this map was presented to Carleton University in a brief ceremony covered by CBC.

Other peripheral activities included: A geo-caching treasure hunt, a student mapping contest and a job fair. Students and exhibitors learned about each other’s GIS endeavors through the Exhibitor Trade Show, which provided an open and casual forum for students to speak with GIS professionals and learn about real-world applications and career opportunities.

The PCI Geomatics booth was frequently surrounded by interested students from Carleton University and a local high school. The curiosity of the high school groups centered on learning the basic uses of remote sensing and how it impacts the real-world. Students from Carleton were interested in better understanding about how PCI and companies alike leverage the skills and knowledge of trained geospatial professionals.

Carleton did an exceptional job hosting GIS Day and we look forward to attending it next year!

University of Ottawa

Doug Stiff - Application Specialist at PCI Geomatics

This year PCI Geomatics attended GIS day at the University of Ottawa. We were pleased to be invited and got the feeling that the day is not just for GIS anymore, but is beginning to encompass the entire field of Geomatics. The vendor and professionals booths were split about 50/50 with GIS and Remote Sensing each having a strong showing.

The day was a lot of fun as we got to meet both faculty and students that have been using Geomatica and discuss with them some of the new features that we have implemented. The Introductory and Advanced Geomatics classes at the university had the opportunity to present some of their posters and it was nice to see the variety of work that was being done with the use of Geomatica 10.

Of particular interest to both university and high school students was the Career Panel Discussion with GIS representatives including Kevin Jones, Director of Marketing and Product Management from PCI Geomatics.

We look forward to taking part in GIS day next year to interact with students and get them excited about Remote Sensing!

PCI Geomatics Delivers an Automated Image Processing System to COTESA in Support of MGCP Requirements

Richmond Hill, Ontario – October 15, 2009: PCI Geomatics, a world leading developer of geo-imaging software and systems, is pleased to announce that it has successfully delivered an operational automated system for the orthorectification, pansharpening and mosaicking of large volumes of satellite imagery to COTESA, a privately held GIS company based in Valladolid, Spain.

The Spanish Government is working with COTESA to fulfill its requirements under the Multinational Geospatial Co-production Program (MGCP), undertaken by 28 NATO nations participating in the production of global high-resolution vector geospatial data.

Employing PCI Geomatics’ advanced component architecture (GeomaticaX), the highly automated system is used to operationally process high resolution satellite imagery from QuickBird, IKONOS and SPOT-5. The volume of data to be processed with PCI Geomatics’ ProLines, is estimated at 10,000 images over a three year period. PCI’s Proline system is highly modular, providing COTESA the ability to easily add additional processing capability, thus increasing throughput and performance as required.

"PCI Geomatics is happy to be providing an image correction system which will not only save COTESA time and money, but also produce high quality output products," said Dr. Robert Moses, President and CEO of PCI Geomatics.

"COTESA has considered the wide spectrum of image processing products in the marketplace and has chosen PCI Geomatics due to the high quality of the results provided by Geomatica's algorithms and the substantial increase in processing capability acquired with the solution implemented," said Dr. Francisca Gómez, head of COTESA’s Environment Department and responsible of the MGCP project development.

PCI Geomatics Inc. and Iunctus Geomatics Corp. make a complete map of Alberta in one weekend! (Alberta is a slightly bigger landmass than France)

Last Friday before leaving for the weekend, the PCI Geomatics Research and Development team set up a large mosaic processing task to test our new distributed job processing system.

The test data consisted of 349 SPOT-5 B scenes (panchromatic, 2.5 m pixel size) that covered the province of Alberta from the extensive Iunctus Geomatics Corp. SPOT archive. The reference data was a Landsat derived mosaic of Alberta and a subset of road vectors from the Canadian Road Network data set.

Needless to say, we were very pleased to see that when we returned on Monday morning, that a high quality 2.5 m panchromatic mosaic of Alberta had been produced in just 51 hours and 20 minutes!

There were a number reasons that we are particularly pleased with the outcomes of this test. The first, and most obvious reason is that the overall mosaic is of such high quality. The neighborhood tone balancing was effective, with only few poor quality areas that were limited by availability of imagery without haze (and low dynamic range). The geometric accuracy was also very good, with 294 scenes having total GCP residual under 2.5 pixels.

In a production environment the unsatisfactory scenes would be corrected during the process suspension through manual GCP collection, or adjustment of their radiometry. If a scene was beyond repair it could easily be replaced with new data with the help of the mosaic update workflow.

We were also very pleased that it demonstrated the practical functionality of the distributed job processing system. By concurrently running multiple processing threads on four CPU servers with 15 simultaneous jobs running in the system, production rate was greatly enhanced.

This system was created for a development project undertaken by PCI, Iunctus Geomatics Corp. and the Alberta Terrestrial Imaging Center (ATIC), and funded by Precarn Inc. and Alberta Advanced Education and Technology. The configuration of this particular processing system was designed to meet production throughput requirements of 800 scenes per week, in other terms, processing rates of 12.6 minutes per scene. We achieved a higher throughput rate (8.9 minutes per scene), using this system (a multi-CPU configuration with distributed job processing system). PCI offers a hardware accelerated system, the GeoImaging Accelerator; using this type of system the throughput would improve to 2.8 minutes per scene! That would have meant that the Alberta mosaic would have taken less than 1 day (16 hours!) to complete. If you are facing challenges processing diverse, high volume datasets in an automated manner, contact PCI Geomatics today!

ESRI 2009 User Conference - Jack Dangermond speaks during the Plenary SessionPCI Geomatics was pleased to attend the 2009 ESRI User Conference (UC) in San Diego from July 11-17. The ESRI UC is a very exciting annual event, filled with industry focused meetings, technical sessions showcasing ESRI technology as well as case studies given by GIS users from all around the world. PCI Geomatics has recently become an ESRI Business Partner, so for us it was exhilarating experience to be a part of the ESRI UC for the first time. Walking into the Plenary Session, it felt like we were attending a rock concert, complete with three giant TV Jumbotrons!

PCI Geomatics was represented by Marketing, Sales and Engineering staff, all well versed in upcoming plans to launch PCI-ESRI integrated products. The ESRI staff from their US and Canadian offices were extremely welcoming, in addition to other international ESRI companies who operate independently and re-sell ESRI products in their respective markets. PCI’s message and presence were very well received.

The ESRI Monterey Cross Defense exhibitPCI presented some of its key technologies at the ESRI UC including satellite modeling/sensor support, as well as advanced SAR processing. Booth #2018 was selected for our main exhibit due to its proximity to satellite data providers such as Geoeye, Digital Globe, Infoterra, and Spot Image. Through PCI Geomatics US, PCI participated in Monterey Cross (MX), a joint effort among ESRI and ESRI business partners that demonstrates the value of commercial off the shelf software, enterprise services, and standards-based interoperability to individuals within the defense and intelligence sectors. This unique exhibit caught the eye of many ESRI UC attendees due to its innovative concept. Upon entering the camouflaged briefing area, visitors received a 2-3 minute brief from ESRI staff or one of its business partners (e.g. PCI Geomatics) using an interactive kiosk that was designed to tell the story of MX from the war fighter’s point of view. The brief exposed attendees to innovative technologies presented by the business partners, put into application to solve different aspects of the MX battle problem; all technologies were integrated into a common battle space workflow.

PCI’s Chief Technology Officer David Stanley participates in a panel discussion on Image Processing

Richmond Hill, Ontario - July 16, 2009: PCI Geomatics, a world leading developer of geo-imaging software and systems, is pleased to announce support for the satellite sensor RapidEye, in its Geomatica® software. RapidEye is the only geospatial solutions provider to own and operate their own constellation of Earth observation satellites.

As the industry leader in supporting satellite sensors, PCI Geomatics has included support for RapidEye in its Geomatica 10.2.1 version release. RapidEye is a constellation of five sun-synchronous Earth Observation satellites which provide large area, multi-spectral images with frequent revisits in high resolution collecting multi-spectral data in 5 meter pixel size. RapidEye is the first commercial sensor which makes available the red-edge wavelength, useful for detecting changes in chlorophyll content, giving insight into vegetation health.

RapidEye is supported by the Satellite Ortho Suite in Geomatica 10.2.1, which is currently available from PCI Geomatics.

"PCI Geomatics has proven that Ground Control Points (GCPs) are not required to correct RapidEye data and achieve accuracy within 1 pixel using the Geomatica software," said Dr. Philip Cheng, Senior Scientist at PCI Geomatics. "This allows the user to generate high accuracy ortho/mosaic images anywhere in the world - instantly."

"We are pleased that PCI has come through as the first geo-imaging software provider to specifically support RapidEye's level 1B data product," commented Frederik Jung-Rothenhaeusler, RapidEye's head of Product Development. "We are also impressed that the PCI software can provide such precise locational accuracy with their software, which is of obvious importance to our customers."
