McGuinty Pays Tribute To Spirit Of Mumbai

Ontario Trade Mission Arrives In India's Financial Capital

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty paid his respects to victims of the November 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai during a moving visit to the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel.

Premier McGuinty signed a condolence book at the hotel where dozens of people were killed. He was met by Karambir Singh Kang, the hotel's general manager, who has dedicated himself to rebuilding the hotel, now a symbol of the resilience of the people of Mumbai.

In New Delhi, Minister Pupatello attended a product launch by Ontario's PCI Geomatics. Their new application - an India-specific tool called GeoConference - allows people to respond quickly in the event of an environmental disaster.

So far, Ontario delegates have arranged more than 400 individual meetings with Indian business and academic leaders.

While in Mumbai, Premier McGuinty will lead trade mission delegates in meetings with some of India's key business leaders and investors.

"Mumbai's spirit is contagious, and seeing how the people have rebounded from the tragedies of a year ago is inspiring. I look forward to showing how Ontarians can help the people of Mumbai build an even brighter future for themselves and their children."

– Dalton McGuinty
Premier of Ontario

"Our launch of GeoConference in India, attended by Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Sandra Pupatello, is another example of the commitment by Ontario to the cause of combating climate change."

– Dr. Ashok Kaushal
Director, PCI Geomatics' Indian Operation

- With a population of about 14 million, more people live in Mumbai than the province of Ontario.

- Mumbai accounts for 40 per cent of India's foreign trade.
